FAQs

What can I expect in a counseling session?

In the first session we complete paperwork, discuss confidentiality, and begin to hear your story. The focus of the second session is to continue to hear your story and discover potential areas of strength and improvement.

The third and fourth sessions are typically a time to write down what the focus of counseling will be, called a Treament Plan. The treatment plan will outline what things you’d like to change, for example:

For my child to follow directions the first time; To yell less at my child(ren) or spouse/partner; To improve family member relationships, etc.

The treatment plan outlines your specific goals, how we will measure them, and what will happen to help you reach them.

The following sessions will focus upon meeting your treatment plan goals. We will discuss the progress and decide if we need to add goals, change them, or if you want to be done with counseling. The end goal is to help you decide when you’re done with counseling, so you can get on with your life.

A session usually lasts 50-60 minutes and I recommend regular weekly to bi-weekly sessions, especially in the beginning. Between sessions, I encourage clients/families to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to do something specific outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book, keeping records, or practicing a certain skill. For the counseling/therapy to "work," you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions.

What benefits can I expect from working with a counselor?

A number of benefits are available from participating. Often it is helpful just to know that someone understands. Counseling can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from counseling depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I do accept some insurances and EAP plans.  Please click on the Rates & Insurances tab in the upper left hand corner to view current list.

I also accept self-pay clients.  Payment is expected at the end of the session.

Health insurance can be confusing. The first thing you should do is check with your insurance carrier. Check your coverage carefully. Do you have mental health benefits? How many sessions per calendar year does your plan cover? What is your deductible?
